Things to do in Red River

Fishing

There are many opportunities for local fishing fun by taking advantage of the river that flows through town into the Town of Red River fishing pond. From lakeside fishing, wild streams and special “catch and release” water, we’ve got it all!

Mountains

Red River is nestled in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, located in the southernmost part of the Rocky Mountains. The mountain town is completely surrounded by the Carson National Park.

Skiing

There are two ski areas that call Red River home, Red River Ski & Summer Area and Enchanted Forest Cross Country & Snowshoe Area. Red River Ski & Summer Area is designed for alpine (downhill) skiing; whereas, Enchanted Forest Cross Country & Snowshoe Area is for nordic (cross-country) fans.

Hiking

Hiking is a fun and easy way to explore the natural beauty that Red River has to offer. There are several leisurely trails around town for those looking to have a relaxing stroll through the Carson National Park, as well as the more challenging terrains for those adventure seekers.

Town History

The Red River area is full of history. “Red City” as it was first called, was put on the map when explorers, fur trappers, miners, and prospectors discovered the area. Red River’s population skyrocketed as miners started to pour in and carve into the mountains.

Parks

There are four parks within the town limits of Red River, three of them being located along the river: Brandenburg Park, Mallette Canyon Park, Toni Woerndle Park and the Softball Field and Park.

Museums

Red River has five places listed on the National Register of Historic Places that are available for visitors to explore.

Despite being a small town, Red River has an extensive dining selection that is sure to satisfy even the pickiest eater. You can leave the fancy attire at home and enjoy anything from bistros and cafes, all the way to Italian, Mexican or even the finest steakhouses while still maintaining those relaxed mountain vibes.
