Autumn in Red River is something magical. The Aspens turn gold, the air grows crisp, and every mountain curve seems to glow. If you’re planning a visit this season, timing is everything. Below, you’ll find the best spots, dates, and tips, including a special look at Butterfly Mountain, to help you catch the foliage at its peak.
When Should You Expect Peak Color?
In Red River, the leaf change usually begins in early September and can last into late October. Higher elevations tend to shift color earlier, while lower valleys hold their hues a bit longer. The ideal window for peak color is often mid-September through early October. To time your trip well, use a fall foliage tracker or the New Mexico fall color forecast to track progression by region.
Top 6 Spots to View Fall Color
Below are some of our favorite places to soak in the fall brilliance. Don’t forget your camera and a sense of wonder.
1. Butterfly Mountain (Upper Valley)
This is a local gem. As you head into the Upper Valley, Butterfly Mountain reveals sweeping groves of Aspen that turn brilliant shades of gold. Many visitors say that when the wind blows, the shimmering leaves look like dancing butterflies. This is one reason you could say it is named Butterfly Mountain; however, the main reason is that it simply resembles a butterfly, as the aspens form a shape that resembles a beautiful golden butterfly. Staying in the Upper Valley puts you right in the heart of that magic.
2. Nature Trail (Red River)
A relatively gentle 3.2‑mile roundtrip trail, the Nature Trail offers easy walking and plenty of photo opportunities close to town.Because it’s accessible year-round, it’s a favorite for those who want color without a long hike.
3. Columbine Trail
If you’re up for something more moderate, the Columbine Trail is about 8.5 miles out and back. It features river crossings, fragrant Ponderosa pines, meadows, and clusters of Aspen that shine in autumn. Red River, NM
4. Cimarron State Park / Clear Creek Trail
East of Eagle Nest, this trail runs through mixed forest and alongside Clear Creek. It’s a mellow route, perfect for families and pets. It’s a beautiful drive during this time of year, and the trail offers stunning views as well as numerous photo opportunities.
5. Enchanted Circle Drive
You can’t beat the view from the road. This classic 84‑mile loop passes through Red River, Eagle Nest, Angel Fire, Taos, and Questa. The entire route becomes a ribbon of gold and crimson during prime foliage.Don’t forget your sunglasses! It’s a beautiful sight to see, but the sun dancing amongst the leaves can be a little harsh on your eyes.

Tips for Leaf‑Peeping Success
- Start early. Weekdays and morning hours tend to offer fewer crowds and crisper light.
- Take a jeep or guided tour. Red River Offroad runs Fall Foliage Jeep Tours from mid‑September through November, letting you relax and take in views without worrying about the drive.
- Bundle up. Even in September, cool mountain mornings and wind can make it chilly.
- Bring layers and water. Some trails climb steeply, and conditions shift quickly.
- Stay overnight. Plan a two or three‑night stay to allow for slower mornings and sunset drives.
- Catch reflection scenes. Lakes or wet road edges often mirror the color for dramatic photos.
